Together We End FGM: Community Dialogue Driving Change in West Pokot

In West Pokot, lasting change begins when communities have the space, knowledge and confidence to lead it. CICR brought together women, young people, community leaders and local partners for a community dialogue focused on ending female genital mutilation (FGM), gender-based violence and child marriage.

Creating space for honest conversation

The gathering enabled participants to discuss how harmful practices affect the health, safety, education and future opportunities of girls. Through open conversation, community members reflected on the responsibility shared by families, elders, educators, health workers and local leaders to protect every child.

Rather than treating change as something imposed from outside, CICR’s approach centres local voices and lived experience. Participants explored practical ways to challenge harmful social norms while respecting the dignity of every person and strengthening positive community values.

From awareness to community action

The dialogue highlighted prevention, safe reporting and referral pathways, continued education for girls, and the importance of alternatives that allow families to celebrate culture without causing harm. Women and young people were encouraged to take part in decisions that shape their lives and to speak up for safer communities.

This activity forms part of CICR’s Together We End FGM initiative, implemented with support from Zinduka e.V. and The Rainworkers. The project combines community education, local leadership and sustained dialogue to protect girls and support long-term, community-owned change.

Looking ahead

Every conversation strengthens the network of people ready to act for children’s rights. CICR will continue working alongside communities across West Pokot to build understanding, strengthen protection and ensure that girls can grow, learn and thrive free from violence and harmful practices.
